When I was eleven I confessed to my closest friend I wasn’t like everyone else. I didn’t understand what this meant, not really, but I understood enough to realize I didn’t share the same interests as my peers. They treated me differently and I felt this through to my bones. I remember his chubby face scrunching a little when he asked me, “Well, what are you?”
“An elf, I think,” I replied. Then, he shrugged and we continued our trek exploring the undeveloped country just outside the boundaries of my backyard.
More people should be like my friend.
